Tom Mix attributed - martial Colt Single Action Army -  w/ holster rig & badge; also 101 Ranch & Buffalo Soldier associated. - .45 Colt; 5”+ cut barrel. - About good condition.  Gray-brown patina, well worn w/ light roughness; traces of nickel on backstrap.  Good markings include “U.S.” frame & “101” stamped large on right side of frame, and mixed numbers, frame 3852, triggerguard K inspected 138257, backstrap 30028, barrel obscured but may be 5646. -   Appears as an Artillery Model w/ some replaced parts, including ejector rod head & screw, firing pin, & trigger.  Old replaced german silver front sight.  Cylinder pin screw broken off.  Working; strong rifling w/ light pitting throughout bore.  Stag grips w/ Tom Mix's Lazy T M bar brand relief carved on top of left panel.

With lightweight early double loop holster & cartridge belt w/ billet marked “44C / DENVER MFG. CO. MAKERS / 24”.  Also star in shield “SPECIAL OFFICER” marked silver badge w/ “101” scratched at bottom tip of shield on front & center of star in back.

Listed in a recent Julia Auction catalog, “This revolver was reportedly given to Tom Mix by an African-American special deputy who worked at the 101 Ranch around the turn of the 20th Century.  This revolver was reportedly issued to troops of the 10th Cavalry.  It is well known that Tom Mix was an employee of the 101 Ranch and subsequent to his becoming famous, a frequent guest there.”  -  Discussion w/ helpful Julia representatives indicated the previous owner, who had a special interest in African-Americans in the West, has purchased the gun & rig with the understanding that these assertions were true.  He decided to sell it after he was unable to uncover more information on that aspect of the attribution.  Accompanied by an unidentified clipping illustrating the gun & identifying it as “issued to all black cavalry unit in Colorado.  Later was carried by Black Special Officer on 101 Ranch”.  Also a document discussing Mix's work on the 101 from 1906 through 1911. - The provenance on this fascinating colorful ensemble is far from nailed down, but offers intriguing possibilities for further research, with overlapping layers of historical significance. - antq - item #CA-3852Mix - $6,500

Colt Single Action Army 1st Gen. revolver, smokeless frame - .32 WCF (32-20), 7.5" barrel. Good condition – Mostly gray patina w/ some dings and some areas of pitting; replaced ejector housing retains most blue; legible markings. Working; fairly good bore. Hard rubber grips appear to be reproduction replacements. Documents show shipped in this configuration on 9/9/1907 to Jensen King Bird Co. With Kopec initialed evidence tag. S/n 299372 – C&R ffl – item #CA-9372 - $1,800.  more info...

Colt - Single Action Army - late pre-war smokeless frame 1st generation revolver - .45 Colt - 5.5" barrel. - . - 99%+ full blue finish, with very slight wear at the left muzzle & front of ejector housing; appears as fired very little. Extremely crisp, with sharp markings; no barrel address on top of barrel, left marked "COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45", and right marked "COLT’S MFT. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.". - Left side frame has "rocking horse" rampant colt logo variation. Matching numbers. Excellent plus mech & bore. Very nice heavy replaced stag grips w/ medallion of stag’s head are not well fit to backstrap. I’m told this is a 2nd Gen. barrel, so it’s likely this gun is a factory-quality rebuild. - [cons.eemo.otsprc] - s/n 345197 - C&R ffl - item #CA-97EE - $2,850 (price subject to change without notice)

Colt Single Action Army Revolver - antique, blackpowder frame. - with documents from Colt & ATF - .32 WCF (32-20); 4.75” barrel - Mixed condition, for nice looking overall impression. - Fairly crisp overall; frame retains faint mottling, and backstrap & t.guard have traces of blue; cylinder about 85% thin blue.  Barrel, ejector housing, & cylinder pin appear to be non-Colt replacements with 99% blue, & incorrect “Colt Frontier Model 32 WCF” caliber marking & no barrel address.  Good mech; dirty bore.  Excellent grips are probably replacements. - Documents show shipped in this configuration 9/3/1895 to Simmons Hardware in a 5 gun shipment.  With “JAK” initialed evidence tag. - s/n 161193 - antq - item #CA-1193 - $1,850   more info...

Colt Single Action Army Revolver - 1st Generation, smokeless frame. - with documents from Colt & ATF - .32 WCF (.32-20); 5.5” barrel - Restored to about excellent condition. - Previous cataloger believed this to be a period refinish, and I can't argue that.  Crisp metal; bright factory type blue is 98% on barrel, 85% thinning on cylinder; 97% on grip frame & tg, traces on ejctr housing; very nice subtle case colors on frame.  Good mech; excellent bore.  Colt medallion pearl grips with small chips to both shoulders. - Documents show originally 38/40 cal., & shipped 7/22/1915 to Richards & Conover Hardware.  With “JAK” initialed evidence tag. - s/n 329707 - C&R - item #CA-9707 - $2,350   more info...

U.S. Artillery Model - Colt Single Action Army revolver - with documents from Colt & ATF - .45 Colt, 5.5” barrel. - Very good condition. - Mostly mottled gray w/ some light roughness, and with strong remainders bright blue in protected areas, especially on the barrel which might rate 20-30%.  Good mech; fairly good bore.  Worn wood grips with large chip to right toe.  US with no periods.  Frame HN 48441, t.g. 12097, b.s. 33986, bbl. P 1644, type II patents, single line block address.  Donut ejector head. - Shipped 6/16/03 to U.S. Govt. - s/n 48441 - antq - item #CA-8441 - $2,950

Holster & cartridge belt - fits SAA 4.75” barrel. - Light brown leather; fairly good condition, except slot in belt for holster is about to tear out.  Cartridge loops fit .44's.  I'd guess mid-20th Century. - Ok for display, a bit fragile for wear.  Would fit a wiry skinny feller. - item #CAH-9975H - $185

Colt Single Action Army Revolver - antique, altered to resemble U.S. Artillery Model. - with documents from Colt & ATF - .45 Colt, 5.5” barrel. - Assembled. - Overall impression is of a 70% full blue SAA; fit of parts & nature of some markings suggest this gun has been put together from various antique parts, some possibly martial, to look like an Artillery Model.  Some markings appear to be bogus, particularly most martial markings.  Tight mech; usual bore; excellent condition ill-fitting wood grips with bogus cartouche. - Documents show shipped as a blue civilian model 6/3/1881 to Simmons, in .45 cal, 5.5” barrel. With “JAK” initialed evidence tag. - s/n 65570 - antq - item #CA-5570 - $1,950   more info...

Colt Single Action Army Revolver - antique, with U.S. inspector marks - with documents from Colt & ATF - .45 Colt; cut 5-1/8” barrel. - Good condition. - Gray patina with some light roughness, deepening to pitting in cylinder flutes.  Matching numbers.  Additional markings include RAC on bbl, frame & cylinder; K on t.grd. & bkstrp.  US lightly stamped on frame looks more recent, other markings appear legit & old to my untrained eye.  C overstamped on RAC frame marking in the manner of condemned U.S. guns.  Previous cataloger identifies this gun as a rare matching-number Artillery; I'm not sure what it is. - Documents accompanying this one note “NO INFO”, “No Historical info”, and “Civilian Model”.  I guess the factory has no record of this gun, but if not, I'm not sure why they'd conclude it's a civilian.  Not a criticism, I just don't know why.  With “JAK” initialed evidence tag. - s/n 133085 - antq - item #CA-3085 - $2,500   more info...

Mining Co., historical & colorful outfit.  With “JAK” initialed evidence tag. - s/n 247462 - C&R - item #CB-7462 - $2,850   more info...

Great frontier-looking holster - fits Single Action Army - This came with the engraved F&W Old Army, but seller said he had acquired them separately, so I don’t mind splitting them up. Frankly, I was really taken with this holster, and had hoped this would fit a S&W Model 3 so that I could keep it for myself, but alas, twas not to be. There seems to be a distinct wear-molded channel for an ejector rod, and a 7.5" Colt SAA seems to be the perfect fit. - Numbers "745 (daisy)" & "27" on the back suggest this started life as a catalog holster, but the colorful modifications, appearing to be period-of-use, suggest an interesting & colorful career. The bottom of the holster is extended or sleeved in darker contrasting lightly tooled leather attached w/ two old brass rivets; tarnished silver concho added to flap, horn buttons tied to bottom. Even the cotton thread Frankenstein stitching repairs to the flap add to the appeal of this piece. Overall good, sound, well-used condition. - s/n item #CF-CDY-H - $700

Special info on some of the SAA's above -  "… documents from Colt & ATF…"

A number of Single Action Armies listed above include the note "with documents from Colt & ATF". My informal understanding is that a fellow had apparently set up something of a cottage industry re-marking modern SAA’s to appear to be antique, to increase their value. Fraud aside, ATF takes a very dim view of altering serial numbers on modern guns, and a number of guns were seized and subjected to detailed inspection, with the altered number guns destroyed after the prosecution.

These remaining guns were recently sold by a pre-eminent auction house, with the following notation:

"The documents included are copies of original documents prepared by the ATF and Colt Manufacturing Company. The ATF, Colt Historical Research Department, and Colt Firearms Control Staff researched each firearm. This was part of an ATF investigation to ensure that each of the firearms were in fact original and not forgeries or renumbered in any way. The facts on the research information sheets are directly from Colt records and Colt Historical Research Department."

The documents usually consist of a diagram of an SAA with researchers’ notes on the markings found on each gun, including occasional comments if a marking appeared bogus, along with basically the same info that would be contained in a factory letter – original configuration, shipping date & destination, and number of guns in shipment. Many also include an evidence hang tag initialed by "J.A.K.",  from John A. Kopec, probably the leading expert on martial SAA's in the world, who performed the inspections for Colt & the ATF.
